Juvenile prison gives a false sense of helping juvenile offenders recover. I just believe juvenile prison is like bad rehab. Juvenile prison is like drugs you must take to heal one problem but the same drug comes with a million side effects including death. When I was growing up, I thought a prison was for bad, big as in adult people. If we now have juvenile prison, are we saying you have bad children? Are children that bad that they need to be locked away and institutionalized? I am not saying that children do not commit acts of serious offense. I would prefer they go to boot camp or a rehabilitation center but not juvenile prison. The term Juvenile prison has a negative ring to it and since juvenile prison is often much like an adult prison, the implications cannot be good. Have we noticed that the probability of returning to prison increases dramatically after actually being sent to prison? I find the notion of juvenile prison hypocritical. When children commit small crimes, a slap on the wrist is the punishment. However, whenever that crime includes homicide, off to juvenile prison you go, because now you have a real problem and you are now criminally responsible. Juvenile prison is the sad place we send children to die. How does one get back into society after coming from juvenile prison? If adults find it a hard time coming from regular, how about the kids coming from juvenile prison? All prisons come with negative stigmas and juvenile prison is not exempt. How do you suppose a bunch of maladapted kids help each other in juvenile prison? Juvenile prison is just a holding area for children with deep psychological and emotional issues that society is not ready to take responsibility for. I believe juvenile prison was invented to scare children so that they would not behave badly. Juvenile prison replaced the rod of correction. Just to make note, I am not advocating physical punishment, I am alluding to the principle of making children bear the consequences of bad decisions. There are many things we did wrong as children, but we did not have a juvenile prison then. As a matter of fact, the same offenses committed today are sure to land you in juvenile prison. What then is the premise for the change in the law? Juvenile prison is a glaring fortress representing our inability to address the root of a problem. This root is multi-pronged and without eliminating the problem, juvenile prison is a surety. I think that when we put our children in juvenile prison, we send them confusing signals. In one sense you cushion the blow by sending them to juvenile prison, but the basis for sending them there is that you judged them as adults. We sanction juvenile prison based on age, yet we hold them criminally responsible as adults. We send them away to juvenile prison for help, but they come back confused because they have gotten worse. We can continue to put them in juvenile prison, but the root cause of what got them there is not eradicated. In that sense, juvenile prison becomes the scientific medication for the psychologically impaired. They become dependent and cannot survive without juvenile prison. This institution becomes a crutch and then we wonder why there are repeat offenders.

I don't know if you've ever lived in a bad neighborhood before, but there are young boys and their family members who bully and try to keep everyone in fear of them. They are the sociopath that have no regards for the rights of others. They seem to always end up in jail for commiting violent crimes. The real question is how do you communicate with someone that don't want to do the right thing.

get them while they are young and develop there minds through training ! train a child ! some will thank you later >>and yes there are those that will have to learn the hard way ! maybe they should be made examples of in open public as a determent for the rest of the youth !!

I've found that if you don't associate with the wrong people, they have no reason to approach you. At least that's how it works in my mind. If you look and act guilty your more likely to be found guilty. Some people choose to walk around looking angry and mean because it makes others fear them, but it only attracts conflict.

I'm glad that I wasn't raised in your period of time, nobody taught me about holding you head down. I don't feel the need to be in white neighborhoods either. The worlds problems are not mine to solve. I see things different because I read in the bible that just as your thoughts so let it be unto you. Good night

Ouuu Sista Irma, you got a little heated there didn’t you, but you’re right. Sista Helen needs to understand, most of those kids have no home training and no one in the house to show them different, so someone older and tougher on the street has taken them in, pretended to make them belong, a part of their family and they in turn reek hell in the neighborhood. Those kids do need Boot Camp, but like Brotha David said, they have to be gotten too while they’re young and not just any camp, but a camp with a spiritual concept where they show the kids, love, survival, helping others etc. I believe that to be the answer. I wish there were more camps like Steve Harvey’s around for our children. He’s just amazing. Sista Helen, our sons, brothers , fathers are getting killed everyday for just being black. Its all over the news. A lot of the time it has nothing to do with association. It has nothing to do with looking mean. I’ve had days, where people approach me in the streets and say, sista why you looking so mean? Does that mean they have the right to kill me cause Im black and looking mean. I’ve got things on my mind! I would never disrespect my mother. First off she would probably take my head off, but also no black self respecting child should ever talk back to their mother. I watch my one sister doing it and I get so mad. I just tell her be quiet and let mommy speak. Keep that fire in your mouth. I read the bible too and love the Lord with a passion, but know this Jesus stood for what he believed in. He preached it everyday and expects you to do the same. If you don’t stand for someting, you’ll fall for anything!

it is a shame that there are prison programs in place in america that will lock you ""ie set you up '' for being black ! there is more money being spent on getting blacks in jail then there is to keep them out ,,lock them up and throw away the key ,,the three strikes and many more programs the white Americans have put in place and now there kids are getting caught up in them so white Americas are calling for a reform its the white kids that want to act black and now white america has to live by its own rules of justice !

as a BLACK FATHER I HAVE AM SERIOUSLY WATCHING OVER MY KIDS EVEN MY OLDEST KIDS ESPECIALLY my boys i dont want then to be just another number and its up to me to fight tooth and nails to make sure that doesent happen ,,one of the ways i have been successful is i took them to see the jails and the juvenile halls on a field trip to give the a first hand look at where they could be if the make the wrong decisions or get caught up in the gangs or anything illegal we as parents must teach our kids at all cost even if we have to beat that azz to wake them up or see them in a system that has been design to keep them for the rest of there life

I think that your taking you son on a fieldtrip to the jail was a good ideal. Maybe the schools should have a regular program that allows adolescents to see what the life of a prisoner is for real, instead of watching it from a movie. I'm not going to respond to any of the comments Irma made, because they are disorganized and jump around too much.

Helen, tha tis the beauty of a closed mind and an opened mind, ect. because I was born when I was born, I have a child that was born about the sme time as our president and on the same island as he...so I can ove look all of this birth certific in politics also because of this...do you get the connection...and if you don't then you don't get the connectionof Black identity as this is a major part of our culture and our survival even with some of our people beiieving "the more we suffer the better we will have it in heaven"now where does this come from...oh and Helen, you many not remember a lotof you problems taht you speak of on this site...so lets not use the Bible as an excuse for not obeying what it says...Ihave a bible also but I will not turn the other cheek if someone slaps me...will you?!? so pleas edon't come to me with taht bible crap when it is you notme violating it!!! (smile) have a good night as it is only 12: 23 am where I am... Oh and Helen , I did not chose to be in a White neighborhood, I always choose to be wheere I am at the time as the proper place for me to be at aht time whichhas nothing to do with skin color...and you already know I have sisters and brothers that you could never teel they are black...and Ilive in a neighborhood whre we are the only black family in it...not because of skin color, but because we love it and could afford to have it belong to us and not us and the bank...how about you? (smile) and, even more important Helen, I was raised by my parents and not grow up raising them...even after I was grown I never would talk back to my mother not onlyout of respect, but out of fear that she would never not allow me to be her authority and calling the cops would have ment this would have ben done after I was fixed up by a doctor!!!! my childre were raised like this not drugs no jail no judge corrected mychildren ans not had todo for me. (smile) and Helen I do hoope tah tone day you will have a Black identity and not one taught to you by those who have you still stayingin your place and suffering so that you can get your reward inheaven...but, I amhappy that you do all of your shopping in those Black business in your Black good community...so assuring that there are still some good, dafe all Black neighborhoods.lol (smile)

@ david and then I really will leave the blog for good... the way we get justice is to take thewhite man's laws already on the books and force them to enforce them, it is as simple as that...we did not create on new law in the 60s they just put new names on them...like ALL MEN ARE EQUAL AS IN MANKIND?!? (smile)

This is why those class in many of our public schools now have moved beyond teachilg slavery when it comes to Black history to classes on the Black family. Here is something I learned in one of those class about our unique family make up... It is said that Black parents at too rough and violent on their children especially the male children...and this is one of the reasons why... the black parent must teach taht while the courts will give a White male a slap on teh hands...taht same court will cut the hand of the black male completely OFF. Learn our history and stop the brain washing about we are violent!!!! (smile)

@Helen, I am sure that like you the Teaparty also resent and don't like that nonBlacks if they want to teach i public schools in Oakland, Ca. must take some classes in being educated about the Black family make up, and especially taht part about the Mother figure is the main person to honor and not the married father...because the next one in line to be the father figure is the uncle, an older brother be the mother maried or single...all are welcome members who are born in the Black family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELEN THIS IS CALLED CULTURE NOT POLITICS OF KNOWING OUR PLACE!!!!!!!!!!! (NUP) (smile)

hELEN, "i" AM SO GLAD YOU brought this up as it is just perfect for me to bring up how if we knew more about how our government works we would be able to avoid a lot of this needless sufferings we do because we allow our law makers to spend time raising money for the coming political campaigns as we do...and I have said all of hat to say that a young innocent Black man has already made that law bill 7010 that raised so much money for those people without white hoods ot almost get to be the majority when would right now have our president up for impeachment... Less than five years ago a well dressed black male was just standing waiting for his ride in a rich. all white neighborhood...when the cops having been called on the black person out of his PLACE in this "good" neighborhood and told him to leave, he asked why as he was not breaking any laws...so next they asked him to show them some papers as to who he was...and like those brave Black innocent youths of years gone by...he insisted on his rights to be on public property for which he was arrested... well as his case was a lot like most cases taht we want pure and clear laws on it ended up in the supreme courts...and it got to clear uo what is a HATE CRIME TO RACIAL PROFILING...AND HELEN WHAT YOU AND THE STATE OF ARIZONA IS BOTH IN TH EEYES OF THE LAW...BUT DON'T TELL AMERICA OR THEY JUST MAY CAUSE THE RIGHT-WING NOT TO BE IN THE POSITION TO DO THEMAXIUM DAMAGE TO OUR BLACK PRESIDENT THAT THEY CAN DO... "K" (NUP).. PLUS WHO IS INTERESTED IN THINGS LIKE THIS ANY WAY AS IT MAKES US LOOK GOOD IN THE EYES OF THE LAW, SOCIETY AND TIS IS NOT GOOD FOR BLACKS...!!!!!! (don't worry I am gone for good....(smile) but, before leaving here is another little story about 'looking guilty"...at least in the public schools in Oakland, ca. if a teacher makes a calim that a black student is guilty , because they hold their heads down when being lectured or accused of something...THEY WILL BE PROMPTLY FIRED!!!! YOU SEE WE HAVE MANAGED TO WIN SOME OF THE BATTLES THAT DEMAND WE GET RID OF WHO WE ARE...A BLACK CHILD IS TO HOLD THEIR HEADS (NOT GO TOE TO TOE WITH THEIR ELDERS WHEN THEY SHOULD BE LISTENING) AND IT IS A PART OF OUR CULTURE TO HOLD ONES HEAD DOWN AS A SING OF RESPECT (MUCH LIKE CALLING ADULTS MRS, MR.) AND NOT A SIGN OF GUILT... ALL OF US DO NOT ACCEPT OUR CULTURE BEING TAKEN AND WE STILL FIGHT FOR THIS STILL...(SMILE)
