Description: The Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks to employ a 9-month, professional practice faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank that would focus on livestock evaluation and selection. This position would begin in spring 2021, or when the preferred candidate is selected for this position. This position will have a teaching emphasis with the responsibility of teaching livestock evaluation approaches to undergraduate students. Instruction includes courses aimed at preparing students for livestock evaluation. The successful candidate will serve as coach of the Ohio State General Livestock Judging teams including those undergraduate team members on the Columbus campus and those at Ohio State ATI. Additional teaching responsibilities will depend on departmental needs and the applicant’s area of disciplinary expertise. The anticipated position will be 100% teaching. Although there is no formal extension and research appointment, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty and staff in youth extension programming and engage in research. Animal herds and flocks are available at the Ohio State Columbus and Wooster campuses to support the programs, and there is a highly functional meat harvesting/processing facility, and arena space for visual appraisal of animals in the Columbus campus Animal Science building.

Expectations: The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the educational mission of the department through teaching of undergraduate courses and outreach education including service as the coach for the undergraduate student members of the Ohio State General Livestock Judging Team on the Columbus and Wooster campuses. There are expectations that the successful candidate will collaborate with other faculty in teaching and outreach engagement endeavors. In addition, the successful candidate is also expected to collaborate and develop a pattern of systematic engagement with industry stakeholders in their programmatic endeavors, many of which have a rich history as departmental alumni who were members of Ohio State competitive judging teams and with 4-H, FFA, and other youth programs, in recruiting prospective students to the Ohio State College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to provide oversight for strategic utilization and expenditures from funds accrued as a result of the sizeable endowment fund for livestock judging team. This fund was developed from gifts donated by departmental and general livestock judging team alumni as well as other stakeholders who value livestock evaluation experiences as an important aspect of the educational endeavors of the department and college.

Qualifications & Requirements
Qualifications: Requirements include a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills in addition to the ability and desire to collaborate with others in a collegial manner. Leadership and academic excellence should be evident in the application. Industry experience is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in livestock evaluation and selection academic programs, and a commitment to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable educational environment.
