Job Description
Assistant Professor of the Practice in Epidemiology
The Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College invites doctoral level epidemiologists and persons with equivalent qualifications to apply for the position of Assistant Professor of the Practice in Epidemiology. This is a full-time, full-benefits, non-tenure track position, with an initial three-year contract and the possibility of regular renewal and future promotion.

The teaching load will be five courses per year (three courses in one semester, and two in the other), with primary responsibility for teaching, mentoring and supporting undergraduate students and their activities. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications, training and experience. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher academic rank. The start date is August 2022.

The Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College is grounded in science and rooted in a philosophy of social justice. It is closely linked to the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society at Boston College, a multi-disciplinary, collaborative research enterprise that addresses critical societal issues in the areas of energy, health, and the environment.

The Program is committed to creation of a healthier and more equitable society and to care for the earth—our Common Home. The program’s educational mission is to “Develop future leaders in global public health who will improve the health of all people and the planet and advance social justice through interdisciplinary, experiential public health education rooted in the liberal arts and in the Jesuit tradition of scholarship and service.” The program currently offers a highly regarded 6-course (18-credit) undergraduate minor and plans to launch a 12-course (36-credit) major.

Responsibilities: The two principal responsibilities of this new faculty member will be to teach undergraduate courses in the Global Public Health program and to mentor and advise students. Specific responsibilities will be the following:
•Teach 5 one-semester undergraduate public health courses, including courses in epidemiology within the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good in each academic year. Faculty members are encouraged to develop new courses.
•Mentor and advise students in each semester (time commitment is equivalent to teaching a one-semester course).

Qualifications & Requirements
Applicants should have a proven record or, in the case of new graduates, a strong commitment of excellence in teaching, a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty, and a commitment to foster openness and inclusivity in the public health community. We especially encourage applicants from underrepresented groups. Specific requirements are these:
• Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, DrPH or equivalent) in epidemiology, biostatistics or a related public health field.
• Commitment to teaching excellence.
• Native English speaker or level 5 proficiency in written and spoken English (on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
• Ability to attract, work with, teach, mentor, and advise diverse students.
