Job Description
Community Engagement Specialist (Remote)
The Community Engagement Specialist at Road Scholar plays a major role in increasing the organization’s visibility and managing our brand through social media and PR. If selected for this role, you will cultivate, steward, and expand the relationships between Road Scholar and our communities using marketing, communications, and PR tools and engagement strategies.

If you get this job, and someone asks “what you do for a living,” you might say…

“I work for a not-for-profit called Road Scholar that provides educational travel experiences for older adults.”
“That’s: ROAD Scholar. R-O-A-D Scholar.”
“We’re not a tour operator; we’re a not-for-profit organization with an educational mission. A university of the world, really.”
“We offer learning adventures in more than 100 countries and all 50 states, including programs for grandparents and grandchildren and shipboard programs.”
“We’re headquartered in Boston, but we’re now a remote company with amazing, flexible work hours and travel benefits!”
“I work on the PR team as the Community Engagement Manager, so I foster engagement with the public, our Ambassadors, and our network of media contacts and help expand these networks.”
“I help tell and manage Road Scholar’s brand story and brand reputation using traditional PR tactics, social media, and grassroots marketing.”
“My favorite things about my job are the amazing people I work with, the supportive and collaborative company culture, and knowing that I contribute to our educational mission!”
“I also love how inspiring our participants are; they show me every day what it means to ‘age adventurously’ and to be a ‘lifelong learner.’”

In this role, you will…

Function as Road Scholar’s primary social media manager, planning and executing Road Scholar’s social media strategy, including content curation, copywriting, engagement, and brand management
Further Road Scholar PR efforts by conducting interviews, drafting pitches, reviewing press mentions, and more
Maintain and grow our media lists through research and journalist outreach
Help to develop and manage influencer marketing initiatives
Create communications and training content (newsletter, training videos, etc.) for the Road Scholar Ambassador program
Coordinating trade show and event appearances for PR Director and Ambassadors

On a typical day, you might…

Answer questions via email from our team of Ambassadors
Review Road Scholar media mentions in the daily press briefing and connect with new media contacts on social media or via email
Read through the day’s “Help a Reporter Out” email to see if there are any press queries we should pitch to (and, if anything catches your eye, draft a pitch!)
Spend some time checking the Facebook inbox and engaging with commenters. You come across a concerning comment from a dissatisfied participant and work with the Participant Experience team to draft and post a response.
Attend a Zoom meeting about a new marketing campaign and give your input on how social media can support the campaign

After Lunch

Curate and schedule next month’s Facebook posts based on feedback from our analytics partners
Do a phone interview with a Road Scholar participant for a PR pitch that you will draft this week
Take a quick walk to clear your mind
Add our latest press release to the Road Scholar press webpage
Start gathering content for the Ambassador Newsletter that you’ll write throughout the week
Or spend some time researching influencer marketing tools that would be a good fit for our audience
