Admit it. If you're married, you want to have a great marriage. No wife grew up thinking, "I can't wait to get into a miserable marriage."
Likewise, no husband got married thinking, "I am so looking forward to this marriage becoming a huge weight around my neck."
But all too often, that's what many marriages are turning into. It's time to change this reality.
Christian marriages are designed to reflect on Earth the Church and Jesus Christ. It's time to rekindle the dream of having a great marriage.
It may not be what you'd like right now, but you should have hope that the relationship with your spouse can become the type of marriage that others dream of having. Without hope, the marriage has nowhere to go.
God wants you to have a great marriage. Remember Mark 9:23 expressing that all things are possible to him who believes. You are being charged to start desiring and believing for a great marriage. It's the first step in the right direction.
Okay, so you say you have the renewed desire for a great marriage? Now, it's time to complete the rest of the equation by delighting yourself in the Lord. It's time to do some work! You may be thinking that if God wanted me to have a great marriage, then He should just make it happen.
Well, that's not at all the way it works. For the supernatural to happen in your marriage, God is looking for the "natural" to add the "super" to it.
This includes the natural part of reading and meditating on God's Word then putting into action what He's instructed one to do. If you are seeking God and acting on his ways, then the Bible promises that he will give you the desires of your heart. Do what many people won't do and do the work God has instructed you to do.
You'll find He'll give you strength to do everything He's asked, especially when approached with the right attitude. For a place to start, check out 1Corinthians chapters 7 and 13.
Finally, we must realize that having the "marriage made in heaven" is not a destination, but a journey. There is never going to come a day when you say, "Wow, I've arrived at a great marriage and I'm done." The marriage relationship is an ongoing process that needs maintenance to avoid slipping into mediocrity or worse.
Feed your marriage with what you've learned from God's word. Just like your body, your marriage needs nourishment. Be consistent and do things which show love to your spouse. As you keep up the consistency, you'll probably notice more and more that you no longer "work" at it because you've readjusted your thinking to line up with God's thinking.
You're on your way to a marriage made in heaven. So the charge is to get started on the "work" or keep up the "work" and remember God wants you to have a great marriage.
