What Ever Happened to Critical Thinking (1321 hits)

In a society where technology is providing answers to problems at the speed of light there is still a place for critical thinking. Today people look at a situation or a problem from a limited perspective. Students think that all it takes is a Google search to get the answer to their question. Students are not taught how to be critical thinkers because they are always preparing for tests that are supposed to capture information about their intellect. The problems that we are facing today are tremendous and they require critical thinking. Our problems are social, economic. environmental and political and they often collide. These are the types of issues that K12 teachers and college professors need to discuss every day. It is a chance to open up their student’s minds to the reality of the society that they live in.

Too many students go to college with a lack of critical thinking skills. It is unfortunate because it is the fuel that drives most college professor’s instruction. They want students who can think beyond the memorization of a formula or a definition. Students who are in K12 schools should spend more time working on critical thinking skills. Here are some strategies that help students to develop better critical thinking skills:


1. Read books that cause you to think about multiple solutions to problems

2. Sit down and talk to your college professor in their office about critical thinking

3. Form a discussion group to critically review books or movies that you select

4. Join a debate team which will give you practice in seeing to sides of an issue

5. Attend a lecture and participate by asking questions and doing your own research

6. Go to the Library and search for books that review critical thinking methods

7. Take time to write down your own thoughts about a lecture that you have listened to

The ability to use critical thinking skills is a great way to maintain a high level of academic performance. You will be open to more learning opportunities when understand the benefit of obtaining new knowledge. Try to identify a mentor who you can discuss topics about the world or topics that are critical to the country where you live. The world is full of opportunities for a K12 or college student who can critically think about solutions rather than focus on problems.

We are in an age which requires a greater level of critical thinking. I should make each person slow down and think through a situation or crisis. A student can gain so many more insights on critical thinking by becoming aware of some of the historical perspectives that affect the way that we think today. If you are a college student consider going on an international studies experience. It will help you to learn ways that other countries infuse critical thinking into their student’s curriculum. The 21st century is the time to take advantage of the opportunity to change the world and critical thinking is the key that opens many doors.
